Horses as Teachers
What is more constant in the
equestrian world than the relationship between a girl and a horse? At thirteen,
I had a mare with poor breeding and an attitude, but she was none the less my
best friend, and I showered her with carrots and told her all my girlish
secrets.
There's an organization in
Greenville that understands this special relationship and uses it to help
abused girls. The organization is Crossroads Group Homes, and one of FDCTC's
members, Wendy Cochran, visited the home and farm and came away very
impressed.
Crossroads houses girls of 10 to 18
years of age. The goal is to teach the girls skills to become survivors, not
victims. The girls get a safe place to live, individual and group therapy, and
animal assisted therapy.
That's where the horses come in.
Some of them are donated. Some are rescued from abusive situations of their
own. All are well cared for and well loved. From the horses, the girls learn
about trust, responsibility and the value of living creatures.
Wendy is planning a schooling
dressage show to benefit Crossroads. It will be held at Fence about a year from
now. FDCTC will help with volunteers and advice. Want to do something sooner?
Crossroads needs donations of riding equipment --- boots, helmets, tack --- in
any usable condition. Or how about giving some of those old riding magazines?
So clean out your tack room and your shelves and call Wendy at 828-894-2729, or
call Lorraine Turner of
Crossroads directly at 864-246-0266. Donations are tax deductible.
Horsin' Around for Fun and
Profit
Elsewhere in this issue, you can
read about our own fundraiser, the 6th annual FDCTC schooling horse trials, to
be held Sunday, October 11th at Fence. This is the big one, where we get the
money to put on those programs we enjoy throughout the year. At the time of
this writing, it looks like we're headed for another full show, and we've got
almost all the volunteers and sponsors we need to make it another great one. So
come out, see your friends, and enjoy the day!
